S.C. student cases more than double as DHEC levies new school guidance

The number of positive COVID-19 cases in South Carolina students has more than doubled in the last two weeks, according to data from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).

From Jan. 10 to Jan. 14, 15,439 South Carolina students tested positive for the virus, about a 106% increase from the 7,449 cases reported the week prior. DHEC also reported 54,042 students were in quarantine last week, a 124.5% increase from the week of Jan. 3.

The report comes only days after DHEC offered new guidance for schools during the pandemic, shortening the length of time staff members must quarantine after being exposed to the virus and relaxing testing requirements for students in quarantine.
