Certain CBD compound prevents COVID cells from replicating, studies show
Recently published studies researching the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) on human and mice suggest that the primary active compound in hemp and marijuana may prevent SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, replication early in the course of COVID infection.
According to one study published by the National Institute of Health, the active metabolite in CBD, 7-OH-CBD, acts after cellular infection, inhibiting gene expression and reversing many effects of SARS-COV-2, preventing the infection from worsening and promoting future immunity.
A separate study from the 2022 American Chemical Society and American Society of Pharmacognosy found that two cannabinoid acids bind to spike proteins of SARS-COV-2, preventing the virus from entering cells and causing infection. Health experts are hopeful that this research will open new doors into treatment and prevention for COVID-19 infection.
Charleston Hemp Collective, a local CBD business, is adding the Wellness Warrior tincture to its product lineup, which contains a 1:1:1:1 ratio of a blend of cannabinoids, two of which were the acids researched in the 2022 study.
