Starting in May, customers of Dominion Energy South Carolina will start to pay higher rates to reimburse the company for the higher cost it paid for fuel. Residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity will see a 5.19% increase in their monthly bill, or about $6.53 more each month in the May 1 billing cycle. More: The State, WCBD

CCSD sees $2k pay teacher raise in preliminary budget. The Charleston County School Board got a look at its preliminary budget for 2023 that includes a $2,000 pay increase for all teachers and a raise of the minimum hourly wage from $12 to $17 an hour for hourly staff. The proposal would require a tax increase to make the pay raise possible. 

Charleston to vote on tourism dollars used toward pedestrian bridge. Charleston city leaders are set to meet Tuesday evening to vote on a plan to use just over $1 million of tourism revenue to help build the Ashley River Pedestrian Bridge. City officials estimate the total cost of funding to complete the pedestrian bridge will be $41.2 million.

Three S.C. metros ranked best in the nation for job growth. Charleston, Spartanburg and Greenville-Anderson metro areas were ranked in the nation’s top 100 for manufacturing growth between 2010-2020 by research group Construction Coverage. Charleston, home of Boeing, ranked No. 63, Spartanburg, home of BMW Manufacturing, ranked No.11, and Greenville-Anderson ranked No.64. South Carolina was ranked No.5 overall across 50 states. 

Charleston ports agency nearly clears backlog. The S.C. State Ports Authority (SPA) reported that the backlog of anchored ships at the Port of Charleston has nearly disappeared. The SPA had taken several steps over the past two months to clear unprecedented cargo logjams at the port’s terminals, leaving two anchored vessels on May 9. 

Parking violators face ‘barnacle’ instead of boot. Charleston parking officials are testing out a new technology called a “barnacle” as an alternative penalty for excessive unpaid fines starting May 9. Barnacles are large yellow clamps suctioned onto a windshield, obstructing a driver’s view and are GPS-monitored.
