Seven years ago, gunfire erupted in a historic Black church in downtown Charleston, leaving nine people dead. The shooting, committed by white supremacist Dylann Roof, was intended to start a race war, investigators later determined, but the survivors and victims’ families stood up at Roof’s bond hearing with messages of hope and forgiveness instead.
