The 10th annual Yes! I’m a Feminist fundraising event returns 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at College of Charleston’s Stern Center Gardens.

“The Yes! I’m a Feminist fundraiser unites feminist communities in Charleston and on the College of Charleston campus in celebration of each other and our collective vision for a more just future,” said Kris De Welde, director of College of Charleston’s Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) department. “This event reminds us that we are stronger together, that we can say no to the rolling back of human rights, and that we can say YES! to feminist futures.

“Our event, open to the public, is a celebration of what we study and advocate for in the Women’s and Gender Studies program at the College, and an opportunity for our supporters to contribute to these efforts.”

Proceeds from the event support the program’s students through scholarships, travel grants for conferences and expanded research, and study abroad opportunities.

“WGS provided me with a quality education and a plethora of amazing opportunities that helped me understand the importance of viewing the world through a feminist lens,” said Kate Peralta, recent alum and Chair of Yes! I’m a Feminist Community Advisory Board’s Committee. “In light of recent events, it is more important than ever to support the WGS program to provide these opportunities and this education to more students as they become the leaders that we desperately need.”

The event is also a fundraiser for the Alison Piepmeier Endowed Scholarship, awarded annually to a full-time student majoring or minoring in WGS at the College of Charleston who is also a campus community activist and leader. Piepmeier, a past contributor to the City Paper, founded the Yes! I’m a Feminist event when she was director of the program. The scholarship has been awarded to five students so far.
