Shem Creek Boat Landing will close Jan. 9 for repairs and upgrades that will take until early spring, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) announced this week.

The popular boat landing will undergo improvements including repaving the parking lot, installing new stormwater structures and storm drain lines, and performing some minor dredging under the floating dock.

The project also aims to improve Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility by reconstructing sidewalks, installing ADA ramps. reconstructing accessible parking spaces and replacing storm grates. This will create a more accessible route from the parking lot to the boat landing.

Though there is no definitive timeline for the project yet, the CCPRC said it is expected to continue through early spring. The agency is in charge of maintaining 19 different public boat landings throughout Charleston County.

In addition to the repair project on Shem Creek Boat Landing, the agency also announced the purchase of 0.53-acres next to the boat landing to increase parking availability in the future. The land purchase is not part of the coming project, according to a statement.
