Two South Carolina politicians are discussing the possibility of raising the retirement age for future recipients of Social Security. U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., said the option should open as long as it didn’t impact anyone “heading into retirement now” in response to a position espoused Thursday by GOP presidential candidate and former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley.
“I think that’s something that has to be on the table, we have to look at,” Mace said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” show. She had been asked about Haley’s call for a higher retirement age for Americans who are now in their 20s.
Mace explained: “I’m 45 years old. I’m assuming that Social Security will be insolvent, that I won’t have retirement funds from what I put into in my adult life, my working life. We do have to look at Social Security. We have got to look at our spending in this country, mandatory and discretionary.”
On Thursday, Haley told Fox News that the Social Security retirement age should be changed for those in the 20s coming into the system “so that it matches life expectancy.”
Haley, who is campaigning today in Myrtle Beach, explained, “’It’s the new ones coming in. It’s those in their 20s that are coming in. You’re coming to them and you’re saying, the game has changed. We’re going to do this completely differently.”
CP OPINION: Brack: Bill on drag shows is just a drag
“In an obvious attempt to legislate morality, generate headlines and bolster divisiveness, seven of 20 members of the uber-right caucus back a bill that would cause businesses that offer drag shows to be classified as “sexually-oriented” businesses — even though drag shows are about entertainment, not sex.”
