The opening homestand for the Charleston RiverDogs starts tonight as fans wonder whether they will three-peat the back-to-back championships of the last two seasons.
“Its hard not to be excited coming off back-to-back championships and having a record off-season for season ticket sales,” RiverDogs President Dave Echols told the City Paper today. “Opening Night is just a magical time of the year, and we are ready to launch another season of RiverDogs baseball.”
On tap for the opening six-game stand at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Stadium will be three giveaways, several looks back at the team’s last two years and a stadium-wide champagne shower.
Here are highlights of what’s coming for the first six games, during which the RiverDogs will face their Carolina League rivals, the Columbia Fireflies:
Tuesday, opening night, 7:05 p.m. REV Federal Credit Union will present the April 11 opening night as fans gather to enjoy pomp, circumstance, hot dogs, pretzels, frosty beers and peanuts — both roasted and boiled. The first 3,000 fans to enter the stadium will get a 2023 RiverDogs magnet schedule.
Wednesday, T-shirt giveaway, 7:05 p.m. The season’s opening Wildcard Wednesday will be highlighted by a concert tour-themed T-shirt giveaway for the first 1,000 fans. The front of the shirt features the RiverDogs’ back-to-back championship logo and its back lists the team’s opponents and game dates in concert fashion.

Champagne and Ring Saturday, 76:05 p.m. April 15’s contest will showcase a different kind of celebration. According to the team, “When you win a championship in consecutive years after nearly a century without one, you like to remind people about it.
“First, we want you to have the bling. The first 1,500 fans into the ballpark will receive a replica 2022 RiverDogs championship ring. Later in the night, we will give the whole ballpark the experience of being in the post-game celebration after winning a title. We will pass out bottles of non-alcoholic liquid, a poncho and free rein to spray each other in celebration.”
Kids’ Sunday, 5:05 p.m. Children can enjoy an early-than-usual game during which youngsters can run the bases after the game. “During the game, we’ll feature kid’s illustrations as our player headshots and have children serving as PA announcer and in-game host,” the team said.
