The U.S. News & World Report recognized The Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) College of Medicine in its list of top graduate schools in the nation in research and primary care rankings.

Out of 172 medical graduate schools in the U.S., MUSC’s College of Medicine ranks No. 56 for research and No. 58 for primary care on the list. Rankings are based on two main categories of data: expert opinion on program excellence and statistical indicators measuring the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students.

“MUSC is honored to be recognized for its commitment to providing world-class academic education through innovative curriculum and quality clinical training via award-winning faculty who are dedicated to excellence,” Lisa Saladin, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, said in a press release.

College of Medicine Dean Terrence Steyer, who is also the vice president for medical affairs, also stressed the importance of being recognized in care and research.

“Our research funding has consistently risen in recent years, a strong indicator of the quality and significance of the research being conducted at MUSC,” he said in a press release. “Our focus on supporting excellence in primary care is reflective of our commitment to meeting the needs of all citizens of South Carolina.”

Steyer added, 90% of medical students at MUSC participate in research with a faculty member, ensuring that students explore several opportunities involved in advancing medical science. About one-third of MUSC medical school graduates go into primary care, a growing area of need that includes internal medicine, family medicine and pediatrics.

This is not the first time MUSC has been recognized by the U.S. News & World Report. In 2022, the organization named MUSC Health University Medical Center in Charleston the No. 1 hospital in South Carolina for the eighth consecutive year.
MUSC provides patient care at 16 hospitals across the state, offering about 2,700 beds. Four additional locations are in development, and more than 350 telehealth sites offer connectivity to patients’ homes.
