Despite the rain, the Gap Gallery show at Redux saw an incredible turnout of art lovers | Photos by Ruta Smith

On the Friday opening night of Piccolo Spoleto Festival, the Gap Gallery took over Redux Contemporary Art Center for a one-night-only art show. The May 26 show was presented by Marie Carladous, the leader of the itinerant Gap Gallery, in collaboration with Piccolo Spoleto and the City Gallery at Waterfront Park.

Through an open call for art, Carladous received 168 submissions of artists hoping to be included in the show. She narrowed it down to 25 artists, who presented more than 200 works in various media.

The Lightning Residency Studio at Redux was open for visitors Friday evening. Grace Womack (middle) will present a show with fellow resident Reese Massey opening on June 2.

It was impossible to miss the installation of a white dress hanging from the ceiling in the center of the gallery by local fashion designer Andrea Tuton, known as A Plus. The walls were covered with two-dimensional works, like black and white illustrations by Cara Fischer, photography by Jacqueline Harris, collage works by Jenny Brant, word paintings by Greg Hart and inventive acrylic paintings by Andrew Frye.

Three-dimensional works included assemblages by Hirona Matsuda, figurative sculpture by Luke Jones, clay works by Taylor Jarvis and more. Mixed media artist Nicole Trimmer donated a work which was raffled off with proceeds benefiting Gap Gallery and the mayoral campaign of Mika Gadsden.

By the end of the weekend, the Redux walls returned to white as if the show was never there. If you missed it, check out photos of the evening.
