The Charleston City Paper has won 16 awards in a statewide newspaper advertising contest for 2023, including staff artist Dela O’Callaghan being named the state’s best designer for the third time. The newspaper’s O’Callaghan and assistant publisher Cris Temples also won the contest’s “Best in Show” award for newspapers with more than 7,500 copies in circulation.

“This is a continuing tribute to the boatload of talent that our designers use to create some of the best advertising in our state,” said editor and publisher Andy Brack. “Not only do we laud their professionalism and designs, but we appreciate our advertisers working with them to create compelling, interesting promotions that really work.”

Judges in the competition praised the work of O’Callaghan, who has been with the newspaper for about 10 years: “Great portfolio that demonstrates designers creativity, talent and versatility. Unique colorful ads that grab your attention. There’s no doubt these ads delivered results for advertisers.”

The S.C. Press Association’s annual Palmy Advertising Awards recognize the best in print and digital advertising among its daily and weekly newspaper members.

In addition to winning two of the top awards, the City Paper also took home three first places, including best awards for public service, food/alcohol and fashion. It also won five second place awards and six third place awards.
