It’s time to break out your annual hurricane guide and stock up on emergency supplies as the first big storm of 2023 for South Carolina is expected to blow wind and spew a lot of rain on Thursday.
Forecasters say Tropical Storm Idalia could hit western Florida Wednesday as a Category 2 or Category 3 hurricane and impact South Carolina by Thursday morning as a tropical storm. A hurricane watch has been issued for the Florida coast. Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis also canceled S.C. events related to his presidential campaign to return to the Sunshine State to deal with storm preparations and the fallout from a Jacksonville shooting in which four died.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Franklin is a Category 3 hurricane in the mid-Atlantic and could churn waters and cause rip currents along the East Coast this week.

A toddler died Friday in a hot car after the mother apparently forgot she left the 16-month-old girl in a car, according to Berkeley County’s coroner. The girl apparently died due to heat. Bishop England High School, where the car was parked, has canceled classes today.

PETA settles with Myrtle Beach zoo; it won’t reopen. PETA announced Thursday that it reached a settlement to keep the Waccatee Zoo in Myrtle Beach from reopening. A PETA attorney told reporters that it was the “worst roadside zoo in the country.”
GUN VIOLENCE: USC student fatally shot entering wrong home. A University of South Carolina student from Connecticut was shot and killed early Saturday when trying to enter the wrong home on his off-campus street, police said. Meanwhile, four died Saturday in a dollar store shooting in Jacksonville that now is being investigated as a hate crime.
Haley to have campaign stop Thursday in North Charleston. The former S.C. governor and GOP presidential candidate also plans a town hall in Indian Land.
