Reports taken from Sept. 18 and Sept. 27

Bogus Bitcoin

Someone apparently scammed a West Ashley woman Sept. 18 out of $8,724 after she received a phone call from a person claiming to be with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, according to Charleston police. The scammer reportedly told her that she had a warrant for her arrest, and to avoid prison, she needed to send him thousands of dollars in Bitcoin. Remember everyone: The real cops like cash.

Practical advice

A West Ashley man working at a Mary Ader Avenue gas station reportedly stole about $20 of merchandise between Sept. 7 and Sept. 20, according to a Charleston police report. The store manager called police, but due to the small monetary value and the time of reported crimes, an officer advised that the man should just be fired, and that a full investigation may not be warranted. No kidding.

Welcome home

A Mount Pleasant family on Sept. 27 told Mount Pleasant police a credit card had been stolen and used during a 10-day vacation. The alleged thief racked up more than $5,000 in charges between several Lowcountry department stores, hotels, restaurants and an auto parts store. Well, we hope the vacation was nice, at least.

So close to being cool

Charleston police on Sept. 21 responded to a party on America Street after receiving reports that more than 100 people were crammed into a small backyard with a live band playing “amplified music.” Police cited the owner for the noise, but hey, at least they didn’t stop the party.
