The Charleston County school board declined to remove trustee Carlotte Bailey from leadership positions, censure her or have her make a public apology for controversial statements made on video recordings posted to social media this month.

School advocates and community leaders called for her resignation earlier this month after the release of several recordings of Bailey criticizing the Black and LGBTQ communities, allegedly saying “there’s no such thing as gay children” and “I won’t be used by the Black community.”

The board reportedly discussed the recordings in executive session, meaning the talk wasn’t open to the public, but when members returned to open session, board member Darlene Roberson alleged Bailey threatened her and two other trustees.  A motion to remove Bailey from her roles as board vice chair and other leadership positions, censure Bailey and have her make a public apology failed in 5-4 votes.

Meanwhile in other Charleston school board news, the board discussed several ongoing issues raised by the public, including the suspension of Superintendent Eric Gallien. Six health advisory committee members ousted last month also formally filed a lawsuit contesting their removal. The suit was filed against trustees Pamela McKinney, Bailey, Keith Grybowski, Ed Kelley and Leah Whatley, the board and the district.
