Roll the dice on a night of mystery, suspense and humor with Charleston Stage’s production of CLUE.

Inspired by the well-loved Hasbro board game and the 1985 cult classic film, CLUE follows six blackmail victims who are invited to an isolated mansion. Each character is given a pseudonym and a weapon before the lights are switched off and a murder occurs. Can the iconic characters — like Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard and Professor Plum — figure out who the murderer is?

Watch as mayhem unfolds and characters and audiences alike navigate through an evening of twists and turns. This thrilling theatrical adaptation is a directorial debut for Colin Waters, a longtime Charleston Stage actor.

Waters said the play will appeal to a large audience. “Whether you like the board game or the movie, whether you like comedy or just coming to see live theater, it will be a fun show that a lot of people will enjoy,” he said.

“If you’re a fan of the 1985 film, you will not be disappointed. There’s some great characters added in the film and some really quotable moments that are absolutely included,” he added. “But of course, there’s also some twists in the stage adaptation.”

Marybeth Clark stepped into the role of artistic director for Charleston Stage in May, when founding director Julian Wiles retired after 45 seasons. She said she’s most excited about the inventive sets in this production.

“We used a very different approach than a lot of other productions — the mansion has many rooms, and we allude to that using these beautiful doors, as opposed to full rooms,” Clark said. “Everything is choreographed, almost like a dance. There’s a sense of going through mazes almost to get to the next place, which is just so much fun to watch.”

The cast for the production includes Charleston City Paper’s 2023 Best Local Actress Eliza Knode, plus Justin Von Stein, Kathy Summer, Liz Duren and more.

What’s next?

After CLUE, Charleston Stage has five more productions in its 46th mainstage season, including A Christmas Carol, which plays Nov. 29 through Dec. 22 and a show early next year called Chicken and Biscuits, a family comedy-drama set at a funeral.

“People in Charleston, for the most part, won’t be familiar with it,” Clark said. “It was a Broadway show by a Black playwright with a mostly Black cast. It will be the first time this show will play in our area.

“Bringing less familiar titles is a challenge in Charleston, but we will always continue trying to have a balanced season that gives people something they’re familiar with and also something new.”

Catch CLUE at the Dock Street Theatre now through Nov. 5. Tickets start at $49.50 for adults and are available through charlestonstage.com.
