MORNING NEWSBREAK  |  Early voting in the GOP’s “First in the South” presidential primary in South Carolina opens today as former President Donald Trump and former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley continue to clash on the campaign trail.

Across the state, early voting locations are open 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today through Saturday and next Tuesday through Thursday ahead of the Feb. 24 primary.  In Charleston County, you can vote early in locations in North Charleston, Mount Pleasant and West Ashley.

Meanwhile, the campaign bickering is intensifying between Trump and Haley.

On Saturday at a Conway rally, Trump attacked Haley for the absence of her husband on the campaign trail.  Michael Haley, a major with the S.C. Army National Guard, is deployed in Africa on a military assignment.  The Conway speech, however, also made international news as Trump “has suggested he would encourage Russian aggression against allies of the United States,” which concerned the country’s European allies in NATO and stoked fears about the United States’ commitment to democracy.  President Joe Biden called Trump’s words “appalling.”

Haley strongly criticized Trump on both counts, again challenging him to a debate.  She told Midlands supporters this:  “I’ll say this. Donald, if you have something to say, don’t say it behind my back. Get on a debate stage and say it to my face.”

Haley is scheduled to be in Summerville Tuesday afternoon.  Trump is set to be in North Charleston Wednesday.
