Summerville-based singer-songwriter Irene Rose is set to captivate audiences once again with her latest release, “Flanagan’s Shenanigans,” a whimsical song created in celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day on March 17.

Rose is an award-winning songwriter with seven albums to her name. She began writing children’s music to expand her repertoire 11 years ago. Most of her children’s music includes character or moral lessons, Christian themes or educational components, she said. But her latest track, “Flanagan’s Shenanigans,” she said, “is purely silly.”

The song is centered around the mischievous escapades of a little Irish boy who pulls one too many pranks on his friends and family and the fate which befalls him.

“It’s a fun, rousing, fist-pumping singalong that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age, from the preschool to the pub,” Rose said.

Rose had never written an Irish folk song before, but part of the motivation in doing so was to honor her Irish heritage, she told the City Paper.

“I’m Irene Rose — I’ve got two Irish names. I was named for my grandmother and my great grandmother. My mom was a McCarthy, so my Irish heritage goes deep.”

She hired an Irish folk band online to record the instrumental track, and they used traditional instruments to evoke the spirit of Ireland. Rose said the song can also serve as a fun and accessible way for parents to teach their children about their Irish heritage and its unique musical traditions.

“It got posted in the Charleston Irish page and somebody with the last name Flanagan commented on it like, this is our new family’s theme song. That kind of thing makes me happy,” Rose said.

Her next song, “It’s Okay to Make Mistakes,” is set to release later this spring and will be dedicated to folks on the autism spectrum, Rose said.

“I wrote it really for the autistic community, but the message can apply to anyone. It’s about not giving up when things are hard and it might take longer for some people. You persevere and try, everybody’s learning along the way and it’s okay to make mistakes.”

With Saint Patrick’s Day just around the corner, don’t forget to check out “Flanagan’s Shenanigans”  and experience the timeless charm of Irish folklore.
