MORNING NEWSBREAK  | Convicted murderer and disbarred S.C. attorney Alex Murdaugh was sentenced Monday to 40 years in federal prison for stealing millions of dollars from clients and his law firm, becoming one of the U.S.’s top fraudsters. He is already serving a life sentence without parole in a state prison for killing his wife and son.

U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel of Charleston is reported to have said he sentenced Murdaugh to a harsher punishment than suggested because he stole from “the most needy, vulnerable people.” Federal agents recommended a sentence from 17 .5 to just under 22 years. Gergel also ordered Murdaugh to pay $8.7 million in restitution to his victims.

Last year, Murdaugh also pleaded guilty to financial crimes in state court and was ordered to serve 27 years in prison alongside his life sentence. The new federal sentence will run at the same time as his state prison term and he likely will have to serve all 40 years if his murder convictions are not overturned on appeal.
