Fourteen downtown Charleston bed-and-breakfasts (B&Bs), inns and small hotels are among the best in 17 destinations across the country, according to a new hospitality ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

Named best in the Charleston market were the Wentworth Mansion in Harleston Village and Zero George Street, a downtown boutique hotel at the corner of East Bay and George streets.

“B&Bs typically offer a unique atmosphere, a complimentary breakfast and a cultural experience authentic to their given location,” the magazine’s senior travel editor, Zach Watson, said in a news release.

The two top facilities received gold badges from the magazine, as did five other Charleston businesses, based on magazine user research. Gold badges indicate they were in the top 25% of 250+ properties considered in the overall rankings across all 17 destinations, Watson said:

  • The Pinch Charleston, 40 George St.
  • John Rutledge House Inn, 116 Broad St.
  • 86 Cannon Historic Inn, 86 Cannon St.
  • 22 Charlotte, 22 Charlotte St., and
  • 20 South Battery, 20 S. Battery St

The other seven Charleston-area businesses on the list were:

  • 15 Church Street B&B, 15 Church St .
  • 21 East Battery Bed and Breakfast, 21 East Battery St.
  • Elliott House Inn, 78 Queen St.
  • Bijou Boutique Inn, 19 Pinckney St.
  • Barksdale House Inn, 27 George St.
  • 27 State Street Bed and Breakfast, 27 State St.
  • The Quarters on Vendue, 30 Vendue Range

The magazine said it ranks B&B properties based on star ratings as well as expert and guest sentiment “by collecting annual awards from distinguished travel publications and TripAdviser user scores.”

Other Southern destinations included in the rankings were Asheville, N.C.; Charlottesville, Va.; Gettysburg, Tenn.; Savannah, Ga.; and St. Augustine, Fla.
