MORNING NEWSBREAK  |  A Republican challenge to U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., by former gubernatorial candidate Catherine Templeton of Mount Pleasant is running into stormy days as her son’s run-ins with the law are making headlines

Brooks Hampton Templeton, 18, is charged with first-degree assault and battery, jail records state, stemming from a Jan. 12 fight during a Mount Pleasant house party that also involved underage drinking. The incident led to the second time in less than a year that the teen was arrested. He also faced charges in September 2023 for pointing and presenting a firearm at a person, according to media outlets.

During the night of Jan. 12, Templeton reportedly hit his victim and knocked him to the ground, and then repeatedly struck his classmate in the head numerous times, according to an affidavit. The victim was reportedly unable to defend himself and the fight resulted in severe bruising and swelling, contusions and black eyes. An affidavit said the victim suffered from at least four seizures that evening, which required hospitalization.

Templeton, booked April 16, was released hours later on a $30,000 surety bond. A court appearance is scheduled for June 7, just four days before the June 11 Republican primary. The Templeton campaign reportedly has declined to discuss the arrest, referring to the matter as a “high school fight.”
