UPDATED, 11:49 a.m., 4/29/24   |  No arrests have been made as of this morning in a fatal Sunday hit-and-run accident in Charleston in which a car struck and killed two pedestrians.

Charleston police said the investigation was active and asked anyone with information to contact them if they have any information about the wreck.

The names of the victims have not yet been released by the Charleston County Coroner’s office, police said in a release.

At 8:32 a.m. Sunday, police got a call from a citizen that two people were unresponsive and off of the roadway on Morrison Drive near the base of the Arthur Ravenel Bridge. The investigation at the scene slowed traffic for hours.

“The victims were declared deceased on scene by Charleston County EMS,” the release said. “Vehicle debris nearby as well as the proximity of the victims to the roadway led officers to begin a hit-and-run investigation.”

So far this year, the department has investigated three traffic-related deaths, but Sunday’s wreck involved the first deaths of pedestrians for the year.

Earlier this year, the City Paper reported about a study that showed South Carolina had a high rate of pedestrian fatalities with 190 people dying in 2021, which was just under 15 % of all traffic accidents for the year. A December 2023 story showed 159 pedestrians died in traffic accidents last year.
