A group of talented young musicians from Charleston School of the Arts (SOA) and Academic Magnet High School (AMHS) offer two chances this week to catch “Sounds Like Teen Spirit,” a musical showcase that celebrates the music of the ’90s.

The concert will be held at Commonhouse Aleworks in North Charleston at 2 p.m. on May 25, and as a part of Piccolo Spoleto in Hampton Park at 7 p.m. on May 26.

Performing in the concert are 27 SOA students, five AMHS students and 2 SOA teachers. They’ve been rehearsing the three hour setlist every Tuesday and Thursday since the start of February.

While finding time for rehearsals that worked for everybody wasnโ€™t easy, the studentsโ€™ hard work has been paying off.

โ€œWeโ€™ve all made it fit because we want it to be a wonderful show,โ€ said SOA Theater major and guitarist Law Fox, one of the performers.

“Sounds Like Teen Spirit” is sponsored by SOAโ€™s student newspaper, Applause. An annual tradition, this yearโ€™s decades-themed concert will be Applauseโ€™s seventh. Several performers contribute to the show every year. For the students, the showcase offers a cool opportunity to perform live music: SOA Visual Artist Alex Muรฑoz told Applause that performing as a musician in last yearโ€™s show “I Want My MTV” gave him the opportunity to step out of his comfort zone.

“Sounds Like Teen Spirit” is a series of three concerts: the debut was on May 5 at the North Charleston Arts Festival, and the performers played crowd favorites such as โ€œDoo Wop (That Thing)โ€ by Lauryn Hill and โ€œSanteriaโ€ by Sublime.

โ€œThe crowd was very receptive,โ€ said Applause advisor and SOA English teacher, John Cusatis, about the May 5 concert.

With two more concerts on the horizon, SOA Jazz Band percussionist Isaac Hilton said he’s looking forward to performing again: โ€œI think it is amazing and everyone should come out to see it,โ€ he said.ย

Come support these talented musicians by attending “Sounds Like Teen Spirit: A Celebration of the 1990s” at Commonhouse Aleworks Saturday or Hampton Park on Sunday — both events are free to attend.
