MORNING NEWSBREAK  | The Charleston Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred Monday morning near a playground at 5 South St. in the city’s Eastside.

Officers went to the area after a shooting occurred about 11 a.m., according to a police spokesman. Once on the scene, they discovered an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Charleston County emergency workers declared the victim deceased on scene. 

As of Monday afternoon, no arrests had been made in the ongoing investigation.

Charleston Co. votes to increase teacher pay raises. The Charleston County School District made an amendment to reallocate funds from risk pool funding to bump up teacher pay by $8,000 instead of the initially-discussed $7,500.

College of Charleston freezes in-state tuition for 5th year. Tuition for South Carolina students attending the College of Charleston will remain unchanged for the 2024-2025 academic year under a plan approved Monday by the Board of Trustees.

Charleston police cruiser hits downtown restaurant. A Monday afternoon collision resulted in a Charleston Police Department cruiser hitting the Chinese restaurant Hot Mustard in downtown Charleston.

Halsey Creek gets a marker and party. The M.A.R.S.H. Project and Charleston Preservation Society unveiled a historical marker for Halsey Creek, located on 10th Avenue between Gordon Street and Winyah Alley. It is the first such marker for the Wagener Terrace neighborhood.

Port cargo moves east, report says. A new report by Cushman & Wakefield found the ports along the Eastern Seaboard, including Charleston’s and those along the Gulf Coast, are now handling more containerized cargo than their West Coast rivals, reversing a decades-long trend.
