North Charleston officials and community leaders celebrated the grand opening of a new affordable housing complex with the Thursday ribbon-cutting for North Bridge Townhomes.

The townhomes, which are located on Meridian Road, are the result of a project from nonprofit organization Bridge North Charleston. It is dedicated to revitalizing the underserved neighborhoods of Accabee and Hub Village, officials said. The project, which seeks to make home ownership achievable, was made possible, in part, from $1.5 million in federal funding through Charleston County.

“I’ve been around here all my life,” North Charleston Mayor Reggis Burgess said at the ceremony. “To see the transformation that you guys have done in this area is a blessing. “We thank you so much (from) the city of North Charleston.”

The  20-unit project has a pricing structure adapted to income levels based on the area’s median income, which ensures affordability for a diverse range of residents, according to a press release. The townhomes are also deed protected as affordable housing for 99 years to ensure accessible home ownership for generations to come.

“We’re going to take folks who actually can build homes that (are) affordable so we can get people where they need to be –and not just have the lots and not use them,” Burgess said.

Officials said the new development includes 12 units with two bedrooms and 2½ baths, along with eight units showcasing three bedrooms and 2½ baths.  Each townhome includes an oven/range, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, washer, dryer and window blinds for new homeowners.
