MORNING NEWSBREAK | The airline giant reportedly has agreed to pay an updated total fine of $487.2 million and invest a similar amount over three years for more compliance and safety programs in a plea deal related to crashes of two 737 Max jets in which 346 people died.
The deal, said to have been reached so the company could avoid a criminal trial, is a result of a plea to a fraud charge related to two 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019, according to reports.
According to the Associated Press, “federal prosecutors gave Boeing the choice last week of entering a guilty plea and paying a fine as part of its sentence or facing a trial on the felony criminal charge of conspiracy to defraud the United States.” The deal still must be approved by a federal judge.
Boeing makes 787 Dreamliner jets at its North Charleston plant. Earlier this year, more than 7,800 people were employed at the plant.
