Charleston International Airport (CHS) saw a record-breaking number of travelers pass through its TSA checkpoint during the July 4 holiday, an increase of 12% from last year, airport officials said.

“This milestone reflects our community’s spirit and resilience and underscores our commitment to providing exceptional service and ensuring smooth journeys for all passengers,” a key airport official said in a news release.

The airport saw 116,350 travelers between June 27 and July 7, compared to last year’s 104,278 travelers during a similar 11-day period. On July 4 alone, 6,876 people passed through CHS, up from 6,027 last year. Over the July 4 weekend, the airport saw an additional 35,009 travelers, up from last year’s 31,537.

CHS officials chalked up the higher numbers to Charleston continuing to be a top destination for leisure and business travelers and the airport’s efforts to partner with new airlines and add more direct flights to more cities across the nation.

But numbers aren’t up in Charleston alone. The TSA broke a record on July 7 by screening more than 3 million travelers at airports across the U.S. — the most people ever in a single day, a release said.
