MORNING NEWSBREAK  |  State Rep. J.A. Moore, D-North Charleston, reported to authorities Tuesday that he was threatened with a gun in an afternoon parking incident outside of his daughter’s Park Circle school. It was her first day in the classroom.

According to a press release by the S.C. House Democratic Caucus, “While preparing to pick up his daughter from her first day of school, Rep. Moore was about to pull into a parking spot when a black truck, driven by a White male approximately 60 years old, approached. The driver brandished a gun at Rep. Moore, an event that left him profoundly concerned for the safety of his family and the wider community.”

A police report said the man then fled and went to an East Montague Avenue bar where officers made contact. Police said the 66-year-old man eventually admitted having a verbal argument, but “denied brandishing a handgun toward the victim.  The victim at the time had no witnesses and there was no security footage available.”

Moore, first elected to the legislature in 2022, said he appreciated the speedy response by North Charleston police.  The agency said this morning that no arrests have been made and the investigation was ongoing.

“Their quick action is appreciated, and it’s a reminder of the difficult and dangerous situations they face every day in keeping our community safe,” Moore said in the statement. “My thoughts immediately went to my daughter and how different this day could have been.

“I was there to pick her up from her first day of school — a day that should have been filled with excitement and pride, not fear. The safety of our children and our community is of utmost importance.”

Moore, a longtime advocate for curbing gun violence, said Tuesday’s situation renewed his commitment to reform gun policies: ““This incident serves as a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done to protect our neighborhoods from gun violence.”
