MORNING NEWSBREAK | The Gibbes Museum of Art on Tuesday announced its lineup of special exhibitions for the fall of 2024. The exhibitions will explore a range of topics and allow visitors to discover new art forms and genres.
The fall exhibition includes:
- Artist Spotlight Series: David Driskell and Edward Middleton Manigault, Aug. 23 – Dec. 1, 2024. This series will feature early 20th century painter Edward Middleton Manigault who gained acclaim during his brief life for his visionary efforts in modernist styles. Also featured is renowned artist, curator and scholar David Driskell whose work celebrates ancestry, faith, community and the serenity of nature.
- Celebrating the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art, Oct. 11, 2024 – Jan. 12, 2025. This exhibition celebrates winners and finalists of what has become one of the South’s most prestigious art prizes.
- Beeple, Dec. 13, 2024 – May 2025. The Gibbes Museum of Art will feature the latest kinetic sculptures of digital artist Beeple, also known as Mike Winkleman. This marks the first time that Beeple’s kinetic sculptures will be featured together in Charleston.
“Connecting the Charleston community with diverse art forms and fostering creativity are at the heart of the Gibbes’ mission,” says Angela Mack, president and CEO of the Gibbes Museum of Art. “We look forward to the upcoming fall season filled with captivating exhibitions featuring the works of extraordinary artists for guests to experience.”

Local artist and entrepreneur Sarah Elizabeth White, better known by her artist name “Swhitey,” brings together her passions of fashion, art and community Sept. 7 to hold a fashion show on James Island to raise funds for the nonprofit “I Am Voices,” which supports women impacted by human trafficking, sexual violence and homelessness in South Carolina.

S.C. Board of Education passes statewide ban of cellphones in public schools. South Carolina school districts must ban students from using their cellphones during the entire school day, but exactly how they go about it is up to district officials, according to a policy the state Board of Education passed Tuesday.
RiverDogs sweep double header, secure fourth position in postseason. A two-run double Tuesday night secured the team’s trip to the playoffs at Columbia’s Segra Park against the Columbia Fireflies. That victory clinched the club’s third South Division second half title in a row. The RiverDogs followed with a 2-1 win in the nightcap to finish off a doubleheader sweep. The team has won eight straight games.
New traffic pattern to be implemented at Patriots Point intersection soon. Drivers who travel along Coleman Boulevard near the base of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge will soon see a new traffic pattern as contractors will finish the intersection improvements on Coleman Blvd. at Patriots Point Road and Magrath Darby Boulevard in the coming weeks.
CofC urges public to join open conversation program. The Civility Initiative is bringing faculty, students and community members together to have open conversations about different topics. Topics range from Covid-19, book bans and the upcoming election day on November 5.
