MORNING NEWSBREAK | A 14-year-old Georgia boy accused of fatally shooting two students and two teachers and injuring nine others in a Georgia school shooting yesterday will be tried as an adult, authorities said. The shooting in Winder, Ga., is the deadliest episode of school violence in the state’s recent history.
Meanwhile in South Carolina from Aug. 29 to Sept. 3, nine people died in shootings, including a North Charleston man who died in violence near Victory Avenue, according to police sources. Nationally, there were 15 mass shootings for the week, totalling 385 for the year, according to GunViolenceArchive.org.
In a Winder park on Wednesday night, about 400 people gathered for a candlelight vigil just before sunset. Two local officials spoke briefly, followed by a sermon from the Rev. Geoffrey Murphy, senior pastor of Winder First United Methodist Church, and a moment of silence. More than $90,000 was raised through online campaigns for the victims.
The teen shooter reportedly used an AR-platform-style weapon, according to Chris Hosey, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Authorities are still investigating how the suspect gained access to the firearm, according to media reports.
The suspect had been on the radar of law enforcement officials for more than a year. Federal investigators on Wednesday said the teen was interviewed more than a year ago by local law enforcement officials in connection to threats made online of a school shooting.
