MORNING NEWSBREAK  | A tropical storm watch has been issued along the South Carolina coast for Hurricane Milton, which is expected to make a powerful landfall Thursday in Florida as a Category 5 storm.

Tropical storm watches went into effect last night from the South Santee River south the Savannah River, while a storm surge warning was posted from Edisto Beach to the Savannah River.

Forecasters predict Milton will weaken to a Category 3 storm before it makes landfall and tracks across Florida and off the coast of Georgia or South Carolina into the Atlantic as a Category 1 or 2 storm. 

Coastal flooding on Tuesday and Wednesday could impact Charleston and Colleton counties, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston. Tide levels could reach minor flooding thresholds.

“It is too far out to provide a detailed total water forecast at this time,” NWS Charleston reported. “However, preliminary guidance indicates that there is a greater than 10% for water levels to peak within major flood stage for the entire Southeast South Carolina and Georgia coast with the early afternoon high tide.”
