MORNING HEADLINES | U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., is urging President Joe Biden to extend the courtesy of a pardon to President-elect Donald Trump.
Clyburn joined MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart Saturday to discuss the president’s pardon of his son. A longtime confidante of Biden, Clyburn said he encouraged the president to pardon his son Hunter Biden weeks before his scheduled sentencing on gun and tax convictions.
“I said to him, you’re a dad, you have a son that is targeted, everyone knows that,” Clyburn said. “You have an obligation to protect your son from what could become an eventuality, if all of these people were to keep their promises to fulfill their threats to go after people.”
He added that Biden was reluctant about pardoning his son, but Clyburn was persistent in giving clemency.
When asked if Biden should also pardon Trump, Clyburn said: “Yes, I do think so. And I think he should pardon all of those people that have been accused and have been targeted so we can clean the slate and have an air of possibilities for the future.”
Biden is also weighing whether to issue sweeping pardons for officials and allies who could be unjustly targeted by Trump’s administration, according to Associated Press.
“If we keep digging at things in the past, I’m not too sure the country will not lose its way,” Clyburn said.
