MORNING HEADLINES | The final four rhesus macaques of 43 that escaped from a Yemassee facility in November have been captured after a drama that made global headlines and spawned monkey socks, T-shirts and more.
All but four of the monkeys were recaptured within two weeks of leaving their enclosure at Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center after an employee didn’t latch a door. But the female monkeys outside of the enclosure continued wandering for weeks in nearby woods, including during last week’s snowstorm, before being recaptured. They were in good health, according to a Friday Facebook post by the Yemassee Police Department. None of the monkeys had been used for testing and were too young to carry disease, according to one report.
The monkeys, which weighed about seven pounds, reportedly were recaptured after last week’s snow when tracks showed captors where they should place traps. Officials also previously said they weren’t particularly worried about the monkeys on the lam during the cold weather because their native habitat is cold – in the Himalayan Mountains of northern India.
