Residents in the Charleston area are being advised to brace for the possibility of a lot of rain Wednesday afternoon. With a high tide occurring around 4 p.m., there also is an increased chance of flooding, especially in low-lying parts of the city, officials said.
Charleston officials say they are closely monitoring a coastal low-pressure system that may cause a storm. The National Weather Service said it predicted one inch to three inches of rain, with higher amounts possible, especially downtown. Minor flooding could also occur in areas with poor drainage or heavy rainfall during peak tide.
“Although the potential for flash flooding is low, make sure to exercise caution on the roads as ponding could still occur,” said Chris Holtzman, a WCSC-TV meteorologist in a report.
Charleston officials say they have activated several measures of the city’s flood mitigation plan:
- Free parking is available starting at 2 p.m. today through 8 a.m. Thursday at the following garages:
- Charleston Tech Center Garage, 997 Morrison Drive;
- 99 WestEdge Garage near from the RiverDogs Stadium – not the Publix garage;
- Stormwater crews are clearing storm drains in known flood-prone areas.
- Water levels are being lowered at Colonial Lake to help to reduce flood risk.
- Charleston police are prepared to close roads, if needed.
Residents are urged to stay alert to changing weather conditions and to be extra vigilant on the roads this afternoon. Slower traffic can be expected during rush hour.
