MORNING HEADLINES  | Five rescued Kemp’s ridley sea turtles – Seashore Mallow, Sunflower, Marigold, Hyacinth and Sweet Caroline – dove into the ocean Wednesday during a special event attended by about 200 people.

The South Carolina Aquarium released turtles after nursing them back to health following rescues from being snagged on hooks earlier this year.

Aquarium officials taking care of them say they develop a special connection with rehabilitating turtles. Ashley Wright, a sea turtle biologist at the aquarium, highlighted the connection that members of staff have with the turtles.

“Be able to work with these endangered species and create such a positive impact on them, their species,” she told reporters. “Our team does absolutely wonderful work making sure that these guys are able to go back home one day, and there’s definitely not a dry eye out here at these public releases.

“It’s such a special moment to see all of the hard work that yourself and your team have put in to make such an impact.”

Through the years, the aquarium has treated and released more than 460 sea turtles.
