MORNING HEADLINES | The Medical University of South Carolina today will break ground on a new $130 million hospital and cancer research center in the Nexton area of Berkeley County.
“The facilities will increase access to care and bring medical specialties closer to Berkeley County and the surrounding areas,” the hospital said in a news release..
The five-story hospital, expected to be completed in three years, will include an emergency room and 70 in-patient beds on the 40-acre site. Adjacent will be a three-story Hollings Cancer Center to provide infusion and pharmacy services to people in the Summerville area that they have to receive at the downtown campus now. It will open in summer 2027.
“That population growth deserves the highest quality of care,” Dr. Saj Joh, CEO of MUSC Health’s Charleston division, told one local television station. “We’re also getting a lot of transplants from other parts of the country that expect quality level care and MUSC Health delivers that in a special way.
“This hospital is a little different because it’s more of a community hospital, but with direct link and connection to our downtown peninsula quaternary hospital.”
Across the state, MUSC has an $8.3 billion operating budget with nearly 34,000 staffers.
