MORNING HEADLINES | Mount Pleasant Town Council is considering adding a third day to its free beach shuttle service to Isle of Palms, but the proposal would more than double the town’s cost.
The shuttle is operated in partnership with CARTA, running Saturdays and Sundays for free for riders to and from the beach. Starting on Memorial Day, the shuttle could add Fridays to the schedule.
Mount Pleasant currently pays about $8,000 for Saturday and Sunday. Adding Fridays would push the total to $18,000.
Town Mayor Will Haynie, however, said the shuttle has grown in popularity and riders need alternative options. Council members said they want to see ridership projections before committing to such a large price increase.
A vote was deferred last week while the council reviews ridership projections. The council is expected to take up the vote at their April or May meeting before the summer season begins.
