MORNING HEADLINES  |  Fifth District U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman became the third Republican competitor to endorse state Attorney General Alan Wilson ahead of a runoff that will decide the party’s nominee for governor.

“As someone who has always believed in participating in our elections, I’ve never sat on the sidelines and I’m not going to,” Norman said Monday.

Part of Norman’s decision to back Wilson over Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette was due to his pledge to veto legislation that would bring casinos to the state.  Norman also praised Wilson for being “a combat veteran, a prosecutor, a family man and a Christian.”

Norman’s backing means Wilson has the support of the third-, fifth-, and sixth-place finishers in the June 9 primary. First District U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace showed her support in her election night concession speech, while state Sen. Josh Kimbrell endorsed Wilson after dropping out less than a week ahead of the primary.  Businessman Rom Reddy of Isle of Palms has decried endorsements and isn’t expected to give a nod to either runoff candidate.

Evette has received backing from President Donald Trump and South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster.

The runoff is June 23. Early voting is Wednesday and Thursday only.
