MORNING HEADLINES  |  Authorities this week arrested four youths and two adults after a Fourth of July block party in North Charleston’s Chicora-Cherokee neighborhood. The city-permitted block party erupted into violence, which was captured on a widely-shared video of a police officer being attacked.

The North Charleston Police Department released a statement Sunday regarding the incident, stating officers received reports around 8:30 p.m. of gunfire and individuals firing fireworks toward passing vehicles. A group of what authorities described as “unruly juveniles” descended on the scene and refused to leave when officers arrived and announced the event over, according to Chief Ron Camacho.

Several officers were physically assaulted, including two female officers who sustained minor injuries. Police arrested the six people at the scene and recovered multiple firearms and a makeshift spear.

The juveniles face charges including third-degree assault by mob, assault on police while resisting arrest, resisting arrest and breach of peace. The two adults, an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old, face charges ranging from breach of peace and assault on police while resisting arrest to possession of a machine gun.
