S.C. to see invasion of 2028 Democratic presidential candidates

MORNING HEADLINES | South Carolinians will be able to get up close and personal with a slew of national Democratic presidential candidates in the months ahead after a national party committee on Friday picked the Palmetto State as the site of the party’s first presidential primary in 2028.

Candidates have already been flocking here thanks to the past importance of South Carolina in the national presidential candidate picking process.

In 2008, South Carolina’s first-in-the-South Democratic primary with a voting population that looked like most of America gave legitimacy to then U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Twelve years later, a big win in South Carolina by U.S. Sen. Joe Biden led to his eventual winning of the party’s nomination.

In recent months, several potential Democratic presidential candidates have toured the state, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut.

Other possible Democratic candidates to be on the lookout for include U.S. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, former U.S. Treasury Secretary Pete Buttigieg, former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona; U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna of California; Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker; and Penn. Gov. Josh Shapiro.
