Annie O’ Love’s offers savory vegan foods like the Fungi sandwich with mushrooms, onions and a house-made fungi pesto, but the cafe’s abundance of vegan sweets also shine, like the Apocalypse Cacao — a very chocolatey cookie with almonds and flaky sea salt. Or, try one of the “Jars of Abundance,” which are basically cakes in a jar. The Hi Cutie, for example, is a jar full of chocolate cake, Annie O’s signature Oh’reos (a vegan chocolate cookie sandwich), vegan buttercream and sprinkle. If you can resist scarfing down the whole treat in one sitting, then close up the jar and save it for later.

You can find the cruffin — a cross between a croissant and muffin — at both Baguette Magic locations. It’s one of the cafe’s most popular items (other than baguettes, of course). To make a cruffin, croissant dough is rolled and placed in a muffin mold to give it a swirled top. Cruffins come in rotating flavors like coffee or Boston cream pie.

Who says pastries have to be sweet? Brown’s Court Bakery offers savory treats along with some sweets like blueberry muffins and chocolate croissants. Bagel Bombs, one of Brown’s Courts staple savory pastries, combine bacon, scallion, shallots and cream cheese into bagel dough.Or, spice it up with a mozzarella, pepperoni and jalapeno danish. Regardless of what you choose, there are many choices for those with a preference for sweet or savory — or both!

Euro Foods brings a taste of Eastern Europe and Central Asian sweet and savory pastries to the Lowcountry. While serving items like its famous Acharuli Khachapuri, an open-faced bread boat with cheese, the family-owned store also has sweet treats on its menu, like sweet blintz, a rolled up pancake with filling, or syrniki, a fried cheese curd pancake topped with a blueberry compote.

At La Pâtisserie, the saying “phone eats first” rings true. The pastries at Hotel Bennett’s La Pâtisserie are so beautifully crafted, you’re going to want photographic evidence of this French fine dining approach to pastries. Relax and enjoy the Charleston weather with an elegant Ruby dessert, a red hemispheric candy shell of tart and sweet, coated with chocolate sprinkles at its base and topped with a raspberry.

The fad of croffles has made its way to Charleston at family-owned Maccaro on King Street. Maccaro only offers one flavor of the croffle, because “it’s as good as it is,” owner Pramon Sembiring said. The signature croffle is a simple, sweet croissant from EVO Craft Bakery pressed in a waffle iron and coated in a light sugary syrup for a crisp bite.

Welton’s Tiny Bakeshop opened on King Street this summer, and though “tiny” is in its name, it offers big ideas and tasty baked goods. Incorporating European influences into its sweet treats, Welton’s offers items like a kouign amann (a traditional Breton cake with laminated dough) or canelé de Bordeaux (a French pastry flavored with rum and vanilla, a tender interior and a hardened caramelized crust).
