President Joe Biden and his family touched down Wednesday in Charleston for a vacation on Kiawah Island. During his stay, City Paper offers up fun suggestions on things the First Family can do without disrupting Lowcountry residents too much.
Joe, if you happen to read this and follow some of our suggestions, send us pictures at: email@example.com!
Grab a coffee from KISS Cafe
KISS Cafe on Johns Island posted an Instagram story Wednesday inviting the president in for breakfast. While hosting the First Family for a dine-in experience may cause some chaos for other patrons, why not stop by and pick up a cup of coffee to start the morning?
Pick up a crowler or growler from Low Tide Brewing
Voted Best Bar Staff by City Paper readers in the 2022 Best of Charleston awards, Low Tide Brewing offers great beers to enjoy by the ocean. Cool off from Charleston’s mid-August heat with a 32-ounce crowler of Tide Chaser IPA or Aloha Beaches wheat beer, or opt for a 64-ounce growler. If you’re more of a seltzer kind of guy, we recommend trying the Blue Quencher; it tastes like a blue Gatorade with alcohol — in the best way possible.
Rent bikes on Kiawah and ride along the shore
Kiawah Island Golf Resort offers half-day and multi-day bike rentals. Hop on one of their bikes or adult trikes and explore the 10 miles of pristine beach with the fam.
Get a selfie with Bill Murray
As Charleston’s resident celebrity, Bill Murray is often spotted out and about taking photos with fans, dining at local restaurants and sometimes causing a well-intentioned ruckus. Joe, if you happen to spot him while you’re in town, don’t miss a chance to snag a picture with the actor. Maybe Bill will even offer up tickets to a Riverdogs game this weekend.
Tee off at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course
Presidents love golf, right? Take this opportunity to enjoy the views from Kiawah’s Ocean Course, voted Best Golf Course by City Paper readers this year.
Order tomato pie to-go at the Stono Market and Tomato Shed Cafe
Tomato pie is a classic Southern dish and few do it better than the Tomato Shed. Call ahead and order a few slices. (Trust us, you’re going to want more than one.)
Buy flowers for Jill at Rosebank Farms
Johns Island’s Rosebank Farms market sells local produce and fresh-cut flowers daily. Make a stop and pick out a unique bouquet for Jill.
