A group of children made a grisly discovery Sunday afternoon as Charleston County deputies responded to reports of uncovered human remains on Johns Island.

On Oct. 29, just after 2:30 p.m., deputies arrived at 1075 Main Road on Johns Island to investigate a report of possible human remains. Children playing nearby had happened upon what were described as “skeletal remains” in a wooded area behind a home, according to Maj. Eric Watson with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Watson said there was no immediate evidence of trauma. The remains were collected by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office to be analyzed to determine the cause of death and the victim’s identity.

The investigation in ongoing.
