Store shelves may not be crammed with zawadi, Kwanzaa songs might not be on the radio, but that doesn’t mean that Kwanzaa isn’t upon the Holy City. The Charleston Lowcountry Kwanzaa Planning Committee seeks to reconnect communities to the traditions of Kwanzaa by making the holiday accessible and enjoyable through its week of Kwanzaa celebration activities.
Starting Dec. 26 and running through Jan. 1, there will be events for each day of Kwanzaa — each day is representative of the seven principles of Kwanzaa tradition.
Events start with a lighting of the kinara at Marion Square at 6 p.m on Dec. 26, and will continue throughout the week, including a holiday concert, community potluck, community parade, holiday market, the Ancestor Remembrance at McLeod Planation, and the Big Feast on the final day, Karamu. All events are free, family friendly and open to the public.
