COVID-19 updates: South Carolina health officials reported 693 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, with 17 additional confirmed deaths.
With 5,383 tests collected, the percent-positive rate was 12.9%.
As of 2:08 p.m. Oct. 6, via S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control:
Confirmed cases in S.C.: 147,800 (+693)
Positive tests in Charleston County (total): 15,763 (+22)
Negative tests in S.C.: 1,397,966
Deaths in S.C. from COVID-19: 3,275 (+17)

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg encouraged residents to get a flu shot Tuesday morning, saying the vaccine is more important this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the city is urging vaccination to “reduce the burden on the healthcare system” and reserve medical resources for COVID-19 patients.
According to DHEC and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most at-risk groups for the flu are young children, adults over 50, pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions. Social distancing, hand washing and wearing a face covering are also recommended for slowing the spread of the flu.
