I haven’t been yet, but Zia Taqueria on Maybank Highway opened this week. A coworker dropped a menu on my desk with the words, “It’s real good.” I can’t wait to try it myself.

The menu looks awesome: sopa y  ensalada, tacos, enchiladas, and tortas. I’ve heard a lot about how good tortas are, but haven’t tried one yet. According to Jeff Allen, they’re Mexico’s version of the sandwich — packed full of savory items like pork, beef, or chicken. I’m already making plans to meet some folks over there for dinner tonight.

The one thing I don’t like to see: a market-priced guacamole. If there’s something I love more than butter itself, it’s fresh avocados. I eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I make guacamole by the tub. I brought some to a party the other night and displayed atrocious manners by standing next to my own dip and eating it by the chipful.  So, when I see it on the menu I get excited, especially when it’s described thusly:

fresh mashed avocado, roasted tomato, jalapeno, and cilantro drizzled with black pepper lemon oil.

Sounds delightful. It better not be served in a mortar and pestle on a bed of lettuce (ie. filler). I want guacamole and nothing but guacamole! Particularly if it’s market priced. How much do avocado prices fluctuate anyway?

I’ll report back later.
