Staff reports | A handful of cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed among those who attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner over the weekend, according to a Tuesday statement from the president of the correspondents’ association.
Known cases remained in the single digits as of Tuesday evening, said Steve Portnoy of CBS News Radio, who leads the White House Correspondents’ Association. Among positive cases was Steve Herman, a chief national correspondent for Voice of America. Jonathan Karl, ABC News’s chief Washington correspondent, also tested positive.
Official case counts in Washington have been common, but largely decreasing since the recent Omicron surge, but a modest increase in mid-April has coincided with national trends. The true number of cases is uncertain, as home tests are generally not officially reported, and asymptomatic people may not realize they are infected and may unknowingly spread the virus.
Latest COVID-19 data
The state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) transitioned to weekly reporting of new COVID data last month. This week’s data is delayed due to testing of planned upgrades to the state’s data system, DHEC said in a statement. The most recent numbers were reported last Saturday and covered April 24-30.
State health officials on Saturday reported 3,044 total new cases of COVID-19 and eight total new deaths. As of April 30, 120 COVID-19-positive individuals are hospitalized.
No positivity rate was reported by DHEC.
