The southbound lanes of the U.S. Highway 17 bridge over the Ashley River will close for maintenance nightly for about two weeks starting May 14.
Southbound traffic will be rerouted over the James Island Expressway while repairs are ongoing. Work will start nightly at 9 p.m. and end by 7 a.m., according to the S.C. Department of Transportation. The highway’s northbound lanes will be unaffected and remain open.
Route of the detour
Officials said southbound motorists leaving downtown Charleston on Spring Street (U.S. Highway 17) will be directed onto Lockwood Boulevard and across the Ashley River on the James Island Expressway. They’ll then take the first exit onto the Fielding Connector (S.C. Highway 61). At the third stoplight, motorists will turn left onto Wesley Drive (S.C. Highway 171), followed by a right turn to rejoin Highway 17 south.
