We’re too cheap to spring for an annual gym membership or a monthly fee for a district-run fitness center. But when we can jump in a pool for a couple of bucks, we find it hard to say no. Tucked between Highway 61 and Savannah Highway, W.L. Stephens is a modest-sized pool that handles 300 to 400 people a week. There’s generally enough elbow room to swim, but if you need to check the schedule, there’s a hotline (843-769-8260) that also allows you to check the water temperature and other info. Cost of a dip is $2 for city residents and $4 for non-residents. Parents take note: Family swim times are only twice a week on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. If you can’t wait ’til then, W.L. Stephens’ sister pool, the MLK on Jackson Street, is more amenable to moppets.
