Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) welcomes birders to James Island County Park Oct. 7 for “A Big Sit,” an international birding event.

The gathering challenges birders from around the world to attempt to identify as many birds as possible while remaining in one designated area.

Established in 1992 by the New Haven Bird Club in Connecticut, the program was created with inclusivity in mind so birders of all levels can participate in a fun and educational challenge.

“Seeing and/or hearing birds is good for our well-being,” said Kristina Wheeler, CCPRC natural history interpretation specialist. “Research has consistently shown that more interaction with our natural world is associated with better body and brain health.

“This inaugural event hopes to attract a wide range of people and introduce them to the potential health benefits of birding,” she said. “Whether you are a seasoned birder or brand new, come give it a try.”

Between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 7, participants will perch in a 17-foot diameter circle and look out for unique bird species native to South Carolina.

Some of the species event organizers hope to see include Pileated Woodpeckers, Wood Storks, Anhingas, along with various types of songbirds.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seats and binoculars to the birding event, although some binoculars and chairs will be available on-site to share.

Open to participants ages 12 and older, the event is free to attend with the purchase of a regular admission pass to James Island County Park ($2 per person or free for Gold Pass holders).
