It’s opening day for the highly-anticipated neighborhood den, By The Way, from Uptown Hospitality Group in collaboration with Southern Charm stars Craig Conover and Austen Kroll.

“Craig and I are ecstatic to partner with Uptown Hospitality Group to share our idea of the ideal all-day, all-night neighborhood hang; a spot where friends old and new come together on the regular for good food, killer drinks and great fun,” Kroll said in a statement.

Nestled one block off King Street on the corner of Spring and St. Phillip streets in the space that Warehouse called home for 10 years before its closure in 2023, By The Way offers a cozy atmosphere to enjoy classic cocktails and elevated American fare from Executive Chef Marcus Shell.

Menu highlights include fried oysters and caviar, ‘nduja deviled eggs, steak frites and the duck confit sandwich; while the drink program is centered around “well-made martinis” and variations on classic drinks.

Kroll, Conover and Uptown Hospitality hosted a VIP soft opening on Dec. 11 with a slew of Southern Charm stars in attendance, including Shep Rose, Venita Aspen and Rodrigo Reyes. Today marks the first day the bar is open to the public.

The VIP opening was the first reveal of the space’s newly-imagined interior, created in collaboration with Oliver Haslegrave of the Brooklyn-based firm, Home Studios. There’s custom, storybook-inspired wall illustrations by Benjamin Lai, a packed gallery wall with Charleston-centric photography and artwork, plus a glittering skylight, plush booths and banquette seating.

“We are thrilled to [finally!] introduce By The Way to our Charleston community alongside our great friends Austen and Craig. Our hope is for By The Way to settle in and become a beloved, long-standing staple of this city’s outstanding hospitality landscape,” said Keith Benjamin, co-founder and director of operations at Uptown Hospitality Group.

By the Way is open weekdays from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m., and weekends from 12 p.m. until 2 a.m.  The team plans to expand its hours early in the New Year and introduce a music program. Visit bythewaychs.com to learn more.
